CAGE Questionnaire
The CAGE questionnaire was developed in 1970 by John A. Ewing. It is a set of four questions that can be used for the screening of patients for alcoholism. It is merely a screening tool, a place to start in determining whether or not someone may have a problem with alcohol. It is not meant to provide a definitive answer.
- Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
- Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
- Have you ever felt guilty about your drinking?
- Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning (as an “eye opener”) to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?
